WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC? WHAT CONDITIONS CAN IT HELP WITH?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, arm pain, leg pain and headaches.

Doctors of Chiropractic, often referred to as chiropractors, practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.

Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises. Chiropractic can be utilized by patients of all ages.

WHAT CAN A NEW PATIENT EXPECT ON THE FIRST VISIT?

On the patient’s first visit they must bring a photo I.D, insurance card and medication list.

  • The patient will have intake forms to fill out on their first visit. To expedite the process they can print the intake form from our website and bring it to their appointment prefilled out.

  • A staff member will take the patients’ health history and a detailed report of what the area(s) of complaint and symptoms are.

  • Dr. Switek then determines if an exam and x-rays are necessary for the patient and will then review the results with the patient.

  • Dr. Switek will then perform a chiropractic adjustment on the patient.

  • The use of therapies may be recommended for the patient which include intersegmental traction table, electrical stimulation and ultrasound.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT?

Please plan for the first visit to take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the patient’s case history. Follow-up visits typically only take about 15 minutes.

Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO BE SEEN?

Dr. Switek will create an individualized care plan for you. Every patient is unique and some patients require more treatments than others. A patient’s response to treatments will depend on how active they are with following the doctor’s recommendations for at home care.

Many patients chose to come in for Maintenance care on approximately a once a month basis. Some insurance plans cover maintenance care. For more information on maintenance care you can talk to a staff member at Switek Chiropractic.

DO I HAVE TO BE A PATIENT TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS?

All products at Switek Chiropractic are available for purchase to both patients and non-patients.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT REQUIRE A REFERRAL FROM MY DOCTOR?

A referral is not usually needed to see a chiropractor; however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements. Currently, BCN Advantage, Veterans Choice and Workman’s Comp are the only insurances that requires a referral from a doctor to be seen in our office.

IS CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT SAFE?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal pain.

Chiropractic has an excellent safety record and the risks associated with chiropractic adjustments are minimal, but please note that no health care treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.

Many patients feel relief soon after a chiropractic treatment or treatments, but some may experience soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise.

Neck pain and some types of headaches are treated through a neck adjustment. This adjustment works to improve joint mobility in the neck, restoring range of motion and reducing muscle spasm, which can help relieve pressure and tension.

HOW IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT PERFORMED?

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education.

The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands — or a specialized instrument — to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient’s pain. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient.

CAN CHILDREN AND BABIES RECEIVE CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

Yes, babies and children can benefit from chiropractic care. The birthing process can be traumatic on a newly developing spine and chiropractic can help set up a good foundation for developmental growth.

Children are very physically active especially from participating in sports. Regular chiropractic treatments may also help improve the child’s immune system, including ear infections.

Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly-skilled treatment, and in the case of babies and children, very gentle. Dr. Switek has treated countless babies and children during his time as a Doctor of Chiropractic.

IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE SAFE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN?

Chiropractic manipulation is safe for the pregnant woman and her baby. It can be especially attractive to those who are trying to avoid medications in treating their back pain.

Many pregnant women have found that chiropractic adjustments provide relief from the increased pain and discomfort brought on by pregnancy. Chiropractic care can also help with labor and delivery as well as after childbirth.

WHAT IF I’M NOT SEEING RESULTS WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

If the patient is not seeing results with their chiropractic care and they are following all recommendations for care, the patient should inform Dr. Switek. At this point he will release the patient back to their Primary Care Physician for further evaluation and treatment.
